SaskPower Uses Mobility to Address Business Needs

The SaskPower mobility team has partnered up with Logistics in order to create mobile solutions to help address data lag in the field.  Some of the current apps developed include: PCB Results app, Code Book App, Goods Issue, Planned Inventory, Unplanned Inventory and Stock Check.

The idea is that in rural unmanned district locations there are material sites for the linemen to access maintenance and other construction activities.   Historically in these unmanned locations SaskPower struggled to have accuracy of inventory and reconciling that inventory; with material write offs through inventory adjustments as a result.

Piloting a new approach, the concept is that a storekeeper from a manned store will travel once per week out into these district locations and do a full audit. The storekeeper looks at site conditions, conducts an inventory and handles any environmental issues that need to be taken care of such as Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) oil in transformers. Mobility solutions were created in order to enable the storekeeper to perform these field duties.  These apps allow the storekeeper to remotely check what the stock levels should be, look up unfamiliar material, perform inventory counts as required as well as look up the environmental PCB results.

In the end it’s an end to end approach for these yards.   First the team must go in and clean/standardize and then set up regular audits to ensure that the processes are being followed.  As a result, there has been a large reduction in inventory discrepancies, write offs and adjustments as well as a reduction in the overall reconciliation time.   Further, the yards that have this implemented in we can have full faith that SAP is accurate and can therefore count on that inventory when its required.

The Impact of Digital Transformation on Assets & Logistics in a Connected World

Today’s economy is truly digital, businesses and individuals are part of a connected world. This digital economy is transforming the way we all live and work, and digital transformation creates significant opportunities for the way we manage assets and logistics processes across the Extended Supply Chain. Join Hans Thalbauer, as he shares his perspective and vision on how the IoT can facilitate digital transformation and deliver competitive advantage through optimized and innovative management of assets and logistics.

The Future of Your Supply Chain & the Intersection of Technology

For the last 40 years, supply chain operations have been on an evolutionary path based upon incremental improvements in the functionality of Supply Chain software. Supply chains of today, however, are facing more and more pressure to deliver highly customized products, faster and at lower costs. As a consequence, we can assume the supply chains of tomorrow will be more customized, flexible and adaptive than ever, typically based on product velocity, product value and customer delivery requirements. These new Supply Chain models demand revolutionary capabilities that are not incremental but a discontinuous leap forward. Disruptive technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), AI and Machine Learning, Persistent Data Analytics, Deep Collaboration and Data Visualization will be the enablers for this new class of supply chains. Because of competitive pressures, the movement to the new supply chain models will likely be rapid – a few years, not decades. Remaining competitive means starting now to think how these technologies will fit into the design of your company’s future supply chain. This presentation will focus on these and other technologies, and their intersection with future supply chain design and operations.

A Real Return: Using WM “Warehouse Management” to Generate Savings at Bayer

CropScience, a Division of Bayer had historically relied on a labor-intensive process when managing product returns related to their consignment business. The challenge in this return process came in time requirements, sampling, sample re-batching, building pallets, retesting product and revalidating the product for future use. The process of determining if the material could be blended, re-batched, and reused took a substantial amount of time and resources.

The challenge for Bayer was to reduce this investment in terms of both cost and turnaround time. Using (WM) Warehouse Management, Bayer found that they could the reduce time investment of this task by 50%, saving on labor and allowing staff to focus their time on other value added activities.

All told, this implementation saved significant quantities of pallet moves and time for multiple Bayer Sites. Join Bill Abernathy, Head of Logistics Excellence, Product Supply North America, as he describes how he and his team leveraged WM in unique way to achieve viable results with a real return.

Discover How Southeastern Mills Decreased Costs, Increased Service Levels & Improved Inventory Turns by Over 28%

Like most implementations, Southeastern Mills went live and then found themselves slave to the SAP transactions. Unable to get the SAP system to do the heavy lifting, SEMills embarked on a transformation project that embedded an ongoing optimization methodology and culture into the organization and was able to get SAP to drive significant improvement into their organizations. This was all achieved within 6 months and with standard SAP. Share in their success stories where measures and analytics drove significant improvements in service levels and inventory right sizing including reductions. Attendees will have a clear view on how to visualize the health of their supply chain in terms of these areas of focus. This strengthens the argument to minimize the level of customization in favor of using standard best practices built into the system from which sound measures can be taken to report on.

  • Understand how to achieve a REAL ROI from the SAP system through a transformational effort

  • Maximize the throughput and customer service by focusing on improved supply chain management

  • Ensuring a sustainable approach to manage a disrupting supply chain.

Vendor Managed Inventory for Greater Automation & Cost Savings

Our mine maintenance procurement team took steps to better align with Shell’s SAP Requisition to Pay Process. We identify efficiencies that helped address the high volume of transactions, criticality of timeliness, clear purchase order (PO) commitments and confirmations from the vendor and Intensive Goods Receipt processing. We automated our ordering process which reduced errors, helped move equipment back into the field quicker, implemented evaluated receipt settlement (ERS) and ultimately generated a better return on investment to the business.

This project took a multi-level approach. We increased our auto PO runs, activated ERS evaluated receipt settlement, implemented a Business to Business solution with the vendor, and implemented an Auto Goods Receipt solution.

As a result of this project we saw increased cost savings to the business, accurate account receivables, decreased Full time equivalent (FTE) and proper parts being ordered. We no longer used a paper requisitioning process or traceable proof of delivery and we generated better visibility on accruals.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Cost savings

  • Automation

  • Accurate current Account Receivables statement

MRO Material Master Data Standardization, Enrichment & Governance

CertainTeed Corporation, a division of Saint-Gobain, and one of North America’s leading building products companies committed to implement SAP including EAM at each of its 56 North American manufacturing facilities spanning 5 separate business units. The company was faced with over 230,000 MRO part masters, managed locally at each plant with no corporate standards and with considerable duplication of parts. By implementing the SparesFinder software platform and dictionary alongside SAP CertainTeed was able to reduce its MRO material masters by up to 20 % and significantly improve the quality of the short and long descriptions. This has led to further supplier consolidation and reduction in mean time to repair. SpareFinder’s Gatekeeper governance solution ensures that all new requests are submitted with sufficient supporting information and that new items are created according to company standards and without further duplication.

Key Business Results:

  • Elimination of MRO Material Master Duplicate Items

  • Reduced mean Time to Repair Due to Improved Material Availability

  • Improved Material Master Data Quality

Warehouse Mobile – Swapping Paper Systems for Mobile Technology

AGL Macquarie warehouses hold approximately 55,000 engineering spares. For years paper records have been kept for numerous tasks in the warehouse and along with a manual count paper system for stocktake mistakes were very common. A mobile solution was implemented in 2009 and to this day is still used on a daily basis in our large warehouses.

The presentation will cover

  • The 2009 Mobile solution overview at that time. How it is still used today?

  • How we turned commonly used SAP transactions into mobile applications.

  • Efficiency gains “No more paperwork filing. Yippee”

  • Quality Inspection process. Putting the responsibility back to the engineers.

  • Stocktake. Kill the errors and minimize the time & paper.

  • Where to from now?

This presentation will show how a mobile solution implemented in 2009 is still reaping the benefits identified with a reduction of paperwork and an increase in efficiency. Now these are imbedded in the warehouse culture upgrading to the latest technology will only get better.

Let’s Talk About MM & PM Integration: Why Do These Groups Always Fight

The supply chain and procurement side of the business and the maintenance side have always challenged each other on what each hasn’t done. Maintenance: “They never get my parts on time or there is always nil in stock...” Supply: “Those maintenance guys never give us enough time to purchase their gear...” This deep dive will cover these issues and focus on the two areas where supply and maintenance are tightly integrated in SAP. Both supply/procurement and maintenance professionals should attend this session to understand the tight integration and standard functionality
of their core SAP system.

The Reporting Onion

As an organization matures in its EAM process, so do its reporting requirements.  A key benefit of any SAP implementation is the reporting it provides.  Reporting should never be a rigid or painstaking process.  On the contrary, it should be the result of excellent Master Data organized in a standard manner that provides fluid and useful information to any user at any level of the organization.

The best advice I can give anyone starting an EAM implementation is to focus on master data from the beginning.  SAP’s incredible wealth of data points allows reports to be manipulated on the fly to answer questions that were once tedious to research and semi-reliable at best.  Once an organization sets standards and understands what each piece of master data brings to the “reporting table”, reporting can actually become a positive and exciting process.

To explain how Master Data works at Denbury, our team developed and coined the phrase:

The Reporting Onion

“Reporting so good, it makes you Cry.”

The onion is the body of reporting that contains the layers of master data we use to gather information about the assets we operate.  In the past, an enormous General Ledger (G/L) and thousands of cost centers were relied on to describe work being done in operations.  Naturally, coding errors, inconsistencies and interpretations of what G/L & cost center combination to use caused many inconsistencies.  To gather useful asset based information, end users were required manually review invoices and create spreadsheets to analyze spend.  The introduction of SAP EAM and strong master data changed this for Denbury.

Now, simple processes like building a work order, procuring goods and services & confirming time bring a plethora of master data that is used to make quick, reliable and useful reports.  End users are unknowingly building great reports simply by doing their everyday jobs.  The master data is built once and the results are consistent, reliable and repeatable reports that can be sliced and diced to tell a story that was only once dreamt about.

Impossible Odds: A Story of Strength & Survival

On October 25, 2011, Jessica Buchanan and a colleague were kidnapped at gunpoint by Somali land pirates and held for 93 days, enduring the most harrowing and painful experience of her life. On the day of her kidnapping, she told herself, “some do come out alive, the numbers are small but they do exist.” During her captivity, she was terrorized by her captors, held outdoors in a scrub desert and kept on a starvation diet. Finally, after fruitless negotiations with her captors and her medical state becoming a life-or-death issue, President Barack Obama ordered Navy SEAL Team Six to attempt a rescue. On January 25, 2012, members of SEAL Team Six attacked the heavily-armed captors killing all and airlifting Buchanan and her colleague to safety. In this keynote, Jessica will share the tools she quickly learned to stay alive: how to remain hopeful, trust your instincts and dig deep even when you feel completely empty of any resources. Jessica is living proof that the human spirit is indomitable!

Connecting Asset Management & Supply Chain Throughout the Lifecycle

Whether manufacturing throughput from raw materials or pulling minerals or crude out the ground and processing into its end state, any company that can master speed and agility across the organization will develop a big competitive advantage. The key functions within the extended holistic supply chain are: Operations, Engineering, Maintenance and Stores. These departments work in silos and usually carry independent budgetary and other constraints. How does one get the most from them despite these restrictions? Come listen to world renowned thought leader, Christer Idhammar, as he shares ideas on how to build a closer partnership across functions.

Spectra Energy’s Success Story Deploying Ariba’s eSourcing & Contract Management

Prior to 2014 Spectra Energy operated as three different business units on three different SAP instances. CLM was the existing platform we used for contract management and Sharepoint as our sourcing tool. CLM was not used throughout the organization and maybe 10% of our contracts were actually in the CLM tool. This created a huge issue when trying to enforce contract compliance as many internal employees could not find the contracts and were usually unaware if they were expiring. CLM could not be used for sourcing as we had security issues with on prem software behind the firewall. This made conducting many large sourcing projects very manual and many times deadlines were missed and negotiations were difficult because communication was not centralized.

In 2014 we made a decision to implement Ariba eSourcing and Contract Management modules to fill current gaps and increase process efficiency. The cloud based platform allowed us to interact with suppliers in sourcing events without compromising our security concerns. The contacting module serves as a central repository so that contracts can be easily stored and found across all 3 BU's and expiration of contracts can be communicated to our stakeholders.

Firehouse Leadership for IT Organizations

What if we could transform our IT organizations to foster a culture driven by common-purpose alignment with our business stakeholders, and shift our mindsets from being efficient to becoming adaptable? Would we be able to achieve a greater level of sustained adoption and more rapidly exploit the tangible benefits associated with deployed solutions?

The fire service across the world accomplishes incredible feats on a daily basis, often against unparalleled adversity where achieving positive outcomes with limited resources is all in a day’s work. When looking at what makes these organizations successful, uncommon alignment to a common sense of purpose, hyper-focused execution, and supreme team camaraderie are consistent traits that are evident to anybody who observes from the outside looking in.

From opportunity identification to responsive deployment, learn how Johns Manville has rooted Firehouse ethos within their IT philosophy to create a common-purpose driven culture that continues to push the limits of solution innovation and benefit realization.

SAP’s Cross Application Classification System and Approved Manufacturers Parts List (AMPL)

SAP’s Classification system is a very powerful, yet often unleveraged and misunderstood aspect of the ERP software, working across all modules. In this session, the basics will be explained along with advanced classification functions such as class hierarchies and inherited characteristics, multiple object types to class types and ‘object dependencies’ – covering preconditions and procedures, which are often termed ‘variant configuration’. Armed with this knowledge, you will be in a position to cleanly structure your material master data with as many additional fields as required, in required taxonomies, including all manner of technical data, using standard SAP.

Also covered is the Approved Manufacturers Parts List (AMPL), which is SAP’s functionality around itemizing materials to manufacturers and their part numbers, allowing for product redundancies and ‘interchangeable parts’ – different manufacturer part numbers tied into your approved materials.

How Leprino Foods is Saving $2 Million in Procurement by Optimizing its MRP & PO Collaboration Process

Learn how Leprino Foods saved $2M USD by optimizing the procurement process through a streamlined set of health checks. Learn how they met cost savings goals by linking materials to negotiated contracts and source lists, re-engineered MRP to improve just in time procurement to meet service targets, established regular reports throughout the contract and PO cycle to maintain clean data and accurately replenish inventory. Also hear how Leprino increased confidence and collaboration between the plant and corporate purchasing teams within SAP, streamlined PO communication with vendors, overcame change management and user adoption challenges by optimizing MRP to break barriers and developed a matrix of MRP settings to enhance user experience.

Integrated PM & MM Processes to Achieve Financial & Operational Success

Not a single business (or person) that maintains equipment can effectively, productively, and profitably operate without providing and then receiving information throughout the supply chain again and again and again.  The exact same can be said for anyone in the Supply Chain back through to work management and operations, so why is it that so little attention if often the case when integrating business processes between SAP PM and MM?  When done well the results are often overlooked and unappreciated so let’s review how we can address this critical link that will help to get your teams working together with far greater returns!

Spare Parts Demand and Materials Management?! Isn’t that an oxymoron!

Demand Management and Materials Management are words not often spoken in the world of spare parts (or MRO) and what a mistake this is!  I have not found a business yet that is not heavily overstocked with spare parts ‘just in case’ but still are constantly under the spot light when the part(s) needed cannot be found or are not stocked.  Let’s have a look at this space in SAP beginning with the demand signal from PM, stocking strategies, MRP, reservations, delivery, and returns.   Huge cash opportunities can be easily found!

Comprehensive Procurement Solution Enables BNSF for Success

The result of a two-year program effort, the new SAP based Material Management system (SAP MM) provides a comprehensive procurement and inventory management solution for more than 6,000 BNSF users. The post implementation feedback coming in from end-users is very favorable.

The SAP MM will enable BNSF to further reduce the cost of carrying inventory, the incidences of locomotives held for materials, and the overhead in procurement processes. This is partly achieved through the use of Material Requirements Planning (MRP), which considers factors such as demand for materials and supplier lead times while calculating how much material to order. The system user-friendly features also enable employees to maintain an accurate inventory. Another major improvement are a collection of web applications that are easy to understand for new users and robust enough for power users called SAP Launchpad. The Launchpad web applications are supported on desktop browsers and iPads, allowing users to perform tasks while they are out on the warehouse or shop floors.

A robust search function also makes it easier to find materials with the results showing preferred vendors and the exact price agreement for those materials. This will help employees in the field make better-informed decisions that further reduce spending. The next development phase for SAP MM will be to integrate it with Engineering and Mechanical work orders, which will provide even greater insights into material spending throughout the organization.

SAP Batch Management for End to End Materials Traceability

PG&E Gas operations partnered with our sourcing organization to implement SAP batch management to provide traceable, verifiable, and complete manufacturing and quality inspection information on critical materials used in our gas transmission operations. Batch management ensures that only qualified materials, with appropriate MTRs and Inspection records, are issued to gas transmission construction jobs. Further, in case of a recall or failure, we will be able to quarantine stock, identify where in our system materials were used, and identify what active jobs those materials have been issued to. We have also implemented batch tags with a QR code on batch managed materials and deployed Bluetooth scanners to populate the materials logs on Transmission work and prevent transcription errors.

Key Business Results:

  • We can identify the origin and pedigree of materials installed in our system

  • In the event of a problem material, we can determine where it was used

  • We can prevent non-qualified or recalled materials from being used in construction

From Green Screen to Full Visual – What a Ride! How SAP Transformed Transportation Management for Maple Leaf Foods

Learn how SAP-TM has given Maple Leaf Foods the ability to manage and optimize all activities related to the physical transportation of goods via a single integrated system process.  Learn how manual processes were automated, and how they optimized capacity planning and carrier management utilizing GIS technology, providing full visibility to Supply Chain operations in real time while significantly shortening the time and efforts required to manage operations.

Follow along with Maple Leaf’s Three Golden Rules:

  1. Don’t make changes to the software: Make it as much of an “out of the box” vanilla installation as possible.

  2. Adapt processes to meet SAP best practices: The software currently meets the needs of the world’s top companies, so it can meet your needs too. But, you may need to adjust how you do things. The first objective should be to examine or change processes, not the software.

  3. Data is King:  Quality of data is the most critical success factor.  You have to do it RIGHT the First time, and the devil is indeed in the detail.

Baking Data Quality into your Master Data Meal

Chances are that if you weren’t eating your vegetables as a child, your parents might have tricked you into eating them by baking them as a treat, covering them with cheese or mixing them up in your macaroni.

At Plexxus, we were challenged with defining who really owned master data quality and integrity for our 150K material and 20K vendor masters between our IT and business operation teams. After many years of evolution, we finally found that perfect recipe to blend data quality into existing operational tasks using the same simple strategy our parents used to apply.

Through our deployment of data request forms with macros to perform live SAP validations, SharePoint workflow, Winshuttle and SAP functionality, the Plexxus has implemented a comprehensive and automated process which has proven to dramatically reduce data request rejections, shorten (improve) our service levels, reduce transactional errors and improve our measured data quality.

  • Improved data quality consistency, completeness and integrity (duplicates)

  • Reduced data request cycle time 25% to 50% reductions

  • Reduced transactional errors pricing, unit of measure and part number

Devon’s Journey to Connect with Suppliers

In a tough market in which our and many industries are operating, managing supplier costs can be a major challenge and getting it right can deliver vast savings. Historical communication challenges between operators and suppliers can be overcome by aligning people, processes, data, and technology for both sides. At Devon Energy we are driving value to our business by providing automated price validation, more detailed visibility of spend, and improved timeliness of cost realization using SAP.

We are in the process of implementing Ariba to address the full lifecycle of electronic integration with suppliers including supplier onboarding, sourcing, contract management, procurement, invoicing, and supplier performance management. We went live with supplier onboarding, sourcing, and contract management in May 2016 with the remaining functionality coming online in the next 12 months. The partnership was tested by conflicts between the project deployment approach and Ariba services model, but strong relationships prevailed using our mutual intent as our foundation to success.  Also critical has been the buy-in and interaction within the Devon organization including Supply Chain, Finance and Accounting, IT, and the Exploration & Production Business Units.

Come join Greg as he shares Devon’s journey: what they’ve learned so far and how they are making changes that are enabling their business to become more efficient.
